Reetdachhäuser am Ufer der Schlei

Schlei – Germany’s Baltic Sea Fjord

Down-to-earth, traditional, handmade. This is how you could describe the cuisine of the Schlei region. Fish in all flavours and, of course, in a roll, meat and cheese from the region, as well as fresh bread varieties and cakes: all these culinary highlights can be found at the fish smokehouse Föh, to the gourmet bike tour, and the restaurant ODIN’S Haithabu.

Nordic fresh cuisine

In ODIN’S HAITHABU, past and present come together: Situated in the middle of “Viking Land”, with a view of the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei and only a few minutes’ walk from the Haithabu Danewerk World Heritage Site, owner Oliver Firla has been inspired by the history of the place. The menu features handmade and exclusively regional products of the best local quality – freshly baked bread, sausages, ham and cheese, jams, grilled meat, fish and salads. A special recommendation goes to the mead and ODIN’s gin with Viking herbs, such as juniper, angelica, bloodroot and verbena. Many of the delicacies can also be purchased in the farm’s own shop or in the online shop.

The “SchlemmerTörn”

The near-32-kilometre “gourmet bike tour” in the Schlei Nature Park could probably be done in two and a half hours. But who would want to do that when there are such wonderful opportunities to stop for a bite to eat along the way? For lunch, the traditional “Missunder Fährhaus”, located at the narrowest point of the Schlei, invites you to enjoy pan-fried fish, “matjes”, “Kutterscholle” and the like – all local delicacies that will leave you wanting more – on its sun terrace with a view of the marina. Cycle gleefully further along the Schlei through the lovely Angeln. Fortunately, by then, there should be room in your stomach for a piece of homemade cake in the historic, thatched-roof “Landarzt-Café” Lindauhof, where the clocks tick a little slower. The next gourmet destination is already waiting at the Lindaunis Bridge: The Stubbe fruit farm with café and farm shop.

Eel and fish smokehouse – Föh

In the “Schleistadt” Kappeln, a traditional eel and fish smokehouse has survived the test of time: the “Föh” fish shop has been smoking sea specialities in beech and alder wood smoke in so-called “Altona ovens” directly over an open fire for over 100 years. The three red brick chimneys of the smokehouse are something like the town’s landmarks. In addition to smoked fish, the Föh family also has fresh fish, homemade matjes in various flavours, fried fish, fish salads and – of course! – fish sandwiches on offer, which can be enjoyed on the outdoor terrace with a view of the Schlei.
