In 2009, the United Nations declared Schleswig-Holstein's Wadden Sea a World Heritage Site. The Wadden Sea National Park is a habitat for a wide variety of animal and plant species, a resting place for thousands of migratory birds and home to ten unique Halligen islands. The area stretches from the mouth of the Elbe to the Danish border and covers a total area of over 4,000 km².

Explore Lübeck's medieval Old Town, which is rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and marvel at the imposing Holsten Gate, which welcomes you at the entrance to the Old Town. For all sailing enthusiasts, a trip to the Passat museum ship in Travemünde is a must - but no one should miss the Travemünde fishing port. Many restaurants there invite you to linger and enjoy fresh fish dishes.

More than 200 small and large lakes are hidden here in the east of Schleswig-Holstein, inviting you to go canoeing, sailing or swimming. But it's also worth exploring by bike along the romantic paths of the nature park, past old estates and secluded picnic spots with views of the beautiful landscape of the true north - the perfect place to switch off and relax.
