You can cycle through Schleswig-Holstein's idyllic countryside on 13 wonderful long-distance cycle routes - mostly straight ahead, without any hills or strenuous climbs. If you want to reach the North Sea, turn left at some point and cycle over dykes, through the flat marshes, always following the thatched roofs and the smell of fish sandwiches. If you turn right, you will continue towards the Baltic Sea, past old Viking sites, maritime towns, quaint farms, small cafés and the lake landscapes of Holstein Switzerland. If you want to see something completely different on your cycling vacation, leave the coasts behind and simply cycle through the heartland, right in the middle, as we say here, on The "Ox Trail" (Ochsenweg) or the Old Salt Route (Alte Salzstraße), where history comes alive.
