Canoe and kayak

It doesn’t always have to be the sea.

There are some areas between the North Sea and the Baltic offering variety in abundance that entice visitors to embark on excursions on the water for a day or longer. Discover Schleswig-Holstein’s largest continuous river landscape on the Eider, Treene and Sorge rivers. Enjoy the peace and quiet of nature and permit yourself the company of strutting storks, calling plovers or the rare curlew on your paddling tour.

The canoeing area from the Lauenburg lakes to the Trave in the south-east of the State covers 80 kilometres from Bad Segeberg via Lübeck to Lake Schaal on the former border between East and West Germany. There is plenty of variety along the way. A canal, numerous lakes and two rivers await your visit. With 250 kilometres of waterways, anyone with a passion for the water will find the right route for canoeing in the Stör - Holsteiner Auenland area. Whether you like to paddle through wide expanses of sandy heaths and marshland on the small tributaries to the Stör or you prefer the many bends of the natural meadowland rivers winding their way through the idyllic woods of Holstein’s Auenland – the region offers splendid views from the water. The Slavs who settled here used to call the Schwentine the “holy river”, and today it is one of the most varied waterways in northern Germany. It flows through no fewer than 17 lakes over 55 navigable kilometres until it reaches Kieler Förde (Kiel Fjord). The area around the Schlei also offers diverse opportunities for canoeing. The canoe hire operators in the region will be happy to help you plan your trip. The boats and all the equipment you need will be brought to your desired starting point. Before taking to the water, you will be given a professional introduction to canoeing and valuable tips, as well as your safety equipment for a relaxing trip on your chosen waters.
