North Sea Cycle Route
Welcome to the North Sea
With a distance of around 6,000 km, the North Sea Cycle Route is the longest signposted cycle route in the world. It leads through the countries of Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, England, Belgium and the Netherlands. In Schleswig-Holstein, the North Sea Cycle Route leads from the Danish border to Hamburg. Cyclists can expect to find incomparable nature experiences on their tour through North Friesland and Dithmarschen. Enjoy the beauty of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea national park. The North Sea, with its tides, green dykes, grazing sheep, sand dunes and meadow landscapes, characterise the west coast. The route leads past sand and grass beaches, colourful lighthouses and picturesque villages with typical thatched rooves. Use the opportunity to take an excursion to the islands and Halligen, some of which can be easily circled.
Along the route
On this route, you can discover the beauty of the North Sea region in all its facets. From Niebüll, you can make a trip to Sylt on the train. From Dagebüll, ships will take you to the islands of Föhr and Amrum. In the harbour town of Husum, the castle is worth a visit. In springtime, the castle gardens are transformed into a vibrant see of crocuses. Do you know the Westerhever lighthouse? It is a famous landmark of Schleswig-Holstein and is located in the Wadden Sea national park. In St. Peter-Ording, you should make a detour to the expansive beach with its typical pile dwellings. How about a visit to a restaurant high above with a view of the endless expanse of the sea? The route continues to Tönning, where you can marvel at a genuine sperm whale skeleton in the Multimar Wattforum. You will find opportunities to relax in the Nordseebad Büsum. Past the seal sanctuary in Friedrichskoog, your route will take you on to Brunsbüttel. Here, the Kiel Canal joins the North Sea and offers a glimpse of the grand cruise liners. The final leg leads you through the beautiful Elbe landscape before you reach the Hanseatic city of Hamburg.
