Activities in the Duchy of Lauenburg & Stormarn
North of Hamburg, in the megacity’s front garden, a natural retreat invites you to a country break. And there is plenty to discover between Ahrensburg and Lübeck, Trave and Wakenitz.
If a dense forest surrounds a shady body of water, a special holiday and adventure space is created: the “Waldsee” or “forest lake”. In the Duchy of Lauenburg, the most densely wooded region of the northernmost federal state, there are numerous such resting and bathing places, which combine wonderful cooling with fresh forest air. The best way to discover the forest-lined waters is by kayak or canoe, which can be manoeuvred through canals and dammed rivers across the region. On their route, hikers pass the picturesque towns of Lauenburg, Mölln and Ratzeburg, which present a face that is as unusual as it is beguilingly beautiful from the water side. On the other hand, those looking for adventure will find it in the Sachsenwald: High in the treetops, teams can seek thrills together and share exciting stories around the campfire afterwards.
The Stormarner Billetal is particularly suitable for contemplative hiking tours. Formed by the last ice age, the nature reserve offers bird fans real highlights such as the grey wagtail or the kingfisher. Three golf courses in Stormarn also make use of the ice-age moraine landscape: Gentle hills and lots of water challenge golf novices and professionals alike. After a long day on the golf course, in the forest or on the lake, farm restaurants and country inns offer fresh and down-to-earth refreshments. Slightly stronger alcoholic specialities are offered by the Grönwohlder Hausbrauerei in Büttenwarder, which is well-known beyond Stormarn. At the filming location of the cult series “Neues aus Büttenwarder”, fans can enjoy the delicious “Lütt un Lütt”, i.e. more commonly known as beer and “Korn” – a traditional schnapps.
