Voices of wax-roll phonographs that come over from a distance of 80 years have deeply touched Inge Mandos. It was "farkisheft" (charmed) by the authenticity and power of the voices and the hitherto unknown songs. Out of an impulse she wanted to "sing along" and only later realized what that meant: dealing with cracking and noise, tonalities, tempos, accents, gaps in the text. Support for this project, which soon became part of the project "WAKS" (Yiddish "Wax "), She found with the pianist Klemens Kaatz and the violinist Hans-Christian Jaenicke. Together, they created beautiful arrangements that playfully pick up and complement the texture of the material. "We have been deeply touched by the voices of old wax rollers - original voices of people from Eastern Europe singing their familiar Yiddish songs. They were recorded between 1928 and 1941 by Moishe Beregowski and Sofia Magid, stored for decades in archives and were laboriously salvaged. We want to sing with them and make music and make it sound again, despite the adversities of sensitive material. Time has dug its tracks. Crackling, noise and silence are part of it.
