The canoeing area from the Lauenburg lakes to the Trave in the south-east of the State covers 80 kilometres from Bad Segeberg via Lübeck to Lake Schaal on the former border between East and West Germany. With 250 kilometres of waterways, anyone with a passion for the water will find the right route for canoeing in the Stör - Holsteiner Auenland area. Whether you like to paddle through wide expanses of sandy heaths and marshland on the small tributaries to the Stör or you prefer the many bends of the natural meadowland rivers winding their way through the idyllic woods of Holstein’s Auenland – the region offers splendid views from the water. The Slavs who settled here used to call the Schwentine the “holy river”, and today it is one of the most varied waterways in northern Germany. It flows through no fewer than 17 lakes over 55 navigable kilometres until it reaches Kieler Förde (Kiel Fjord). The area around the Schlei also offers diverse opportunities for canoeing.
