The permanent exhibition at the Heinrich Sauermann House documents the art and cultural history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. New additions include the children’s area with numerous hands-on activities, the department “Flensburg – a city and its people”, and the treasure chamber with gold, silver and faience from the collection. The original farmhouse parlours and the historic furniture collection, with over 900 items one of the most comprehensive of its kind in Germany, are unique. In the neighbouring Hans Christiansen House, Schleswig-Holstein art from the 19th to 21st centuries are exhibited, including the Art Nouveau department, with major works by the artist Hans Christiansen as well as contemporary art from the North. Annually changing special exhibitions supplement the permanent exhibition.
