Unique nature paradise: the Wadden Sea National Park
When the North Sea rolls back at low tide, many set off from the islands, Halligen, and various coastal towns directly into the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea, the largest national park from Sicily to the North Cape.
On a hike over the seabed, holidaymakers get to know its mysterious inhabitants and are able to observe a huge diversity of water birds and waders. Nowhere else in Europe do so many different bird species live as here – they number over two million in spring and summer alone.
Life on the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea revolves around the changing tides. Once there are six inches of water under the keel, it’s time to take excursions to the seal banks, go fishing for sea creatures or set off on a pirate trip. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the dorsal fin of a porpoise in amongst the waves.
