The Green Inland
Right up in the north, close to the Danish border, between the North and Baltic seas and the towns of Flensburg, Schleswig, Husum and Rendsburg, lies the Green Inland (‘das Grüne Binnenland’). The Vikings have left their mark here – the Haithabu Viking Museum provides details of the lives of these tough Norsemen in one of the most important settlements in Northern Europe with the aid of sensational archaeological discoveries. Haithabu, situated at the end of the Schlei, remains enclosed by a massive semicircular wall to this day.
The Scandinavian flair visible in the Green Inland serves as a reminder of more recent events: German-Danish history can be experienced in many places and in many anecdotes – with information points explaining the oddest path of a European border as it passes straight down the middle of a street, the phenomena of ‘Banana Alley’ and the ‘Butter Raid’, and routes which have disappeared from the map.
