Schleswig-Holstein’s hoofed nobility
Trakehners – purebred horses with a history steeped in tradition
The graceful and spirited Trakehner is one of the most distinguished breeds of horses in Germany.
History of the Trakehners
In Schleswig-Holstein the purebred horses are reared around Flensburg, Kiel, Neumünster, Lübeck and Hamburg.
The Trakehner stud originally came from Königsberg in East Prussia. They were first bred here 276 years ago by appointment to the Prussian royal family in 1732. When the breeding tradition collapsed in East Prussia at the end of World War II a small number of horses were rescued and brought to the West.
In 1947 the Panker Stud Farm started breeding Trakehners by the Baltic Sea with 20 studs from East Prussia. Visitors to the picturesque estate can view the horses grazing and spoil themselves with fine cuisine in ‘Ole Liese’, the hotel restaurant named after the favoured horse of the first lord of the estate.
Riding in the Wadden Sea
Taking a ride out into the Wadden Sea on a Trakehner is a unique and quintessentially Schleswig-Holstein experience. The Christiansen Island Stud-Farm on the island of Föhr can arrange it for you (Inselgestüt Christiansen auf Föhr, Kirchweg 9, 25938 Alkersum, phone: +49 (0)4681 3967.

Holsteiners – favoured by kings and first-rate show jumpers
The athletic Holsteiner is a powerful jumper, a versatile dressage horse and a spirited riding horse.
They were first bred 800 years ago in Uetersen Monastery, and from the 16th century were bought by numerous European royal families as saddle horses and draught horses.
The Hanoverian, the world’s largest Warmblood breed, was bred from Holstein studs. Riders and horse lovers should plan ahead for the Holstein Horse Fair in Elmshorn – a must-see event organised by the Association of Holstein Breeders.

The Schleswig Coldblood – the Schleswigs’ ancestors were favoured by the Vikings
The powerful Schleswig Coldblood is a real working animal and is often to be seen in Schleswig-Holstein in the forestry industry or pulling carts.
The ancestors of these willing, chestnut-brown horses are the Jutland horses, which have been mentioned as early as in Roman times and were used over 1,000 years ago by the Vikings.
Those who would like to discover the land between the seas at a pace of bygone days should not miss the chance to take a coach trip with a good-tempered Schleswig.
