Unterelbe and Holsteiner Auenland
Unterelbe and Holsteiner Auenland, with the districts of Steinburg, Pinneberg and Bad Segeberg, attract cyclists with a large network of 22 signposted round cycling routes. Horse lovers will discover a widely ramified network of bridleways, and for canoeists an enchanted water landscape awaits on the Stör and its tributaries. This area will have gardeners’ hearts racing too: as the largest continuous region of groves in Europe, the district of Pinneberg is home to many prominent show gardens and trial gardens. There is breathtaking excitement for all the family from 28 June to 7 September 2008 in Bad Segeberg at the Karl May Festival, when Winnetou and Old Firehand have their friendship put to the ultimate test.
The Unterelbe region extends from east to west from Hamburg to Friedrichskoog, through the Elbe marshes and the Wilster marsh. Situated directly on the Elbe is the little historic harbour town of Glückstadt, which celebrates its famous fish delicacy each year in June in the Glückstadt Matjes Herring Weeks. Visitors to Wilster can take a picnic at Germany's lowest-lying point, 3.54 metres under sea level.
Anyone who fancies doing their body a good turn should treat themselves to a visit to the Bad Bramstedt Moor and Brine Spa.
