From Flensburg to Travemünde
Build sandcastles and play beach volleyball, go waterskiing and fly kites. On the Baltic coast and the seaside resorts of Holstein Switzerland, sun worshippers and mermaids alike will find their favourite place to relax, play and rest.
Fresh wind, clear water and low clouds attract families, couples and fun lovers to the many seaside resorts along the almost 400-kilometre-long Baltic coast and on the sunny isle of Fehmarn. Ruggedly picturesque bluffs and long white sandy beaches, charming fishing villages and lively little towns come along one after the other.
In the very north are the unspoiled natural beaches around Glücksburg and in the Flensburg Fjord area near the Danish border. You will find rest and relaxation at the Schlei fjord, where the popular television series ‘Der Landarzt’ (The Country Doctor) is set. Further south lie the Baltic resorts of the Kiel and Lübeck bays: Schönberger Strand and Weissenhäuser Strand, Heiligenhafen and Hohwacht, OstseeFerienLand and Neustadt. The seaside resort of Travemünde, steeped in tradition, is where Thomas Mann once took a holiday to recuperate, and the Timmendorfer Strand beach resort entices travellers with its celebrities, luxury shopping and German Beach Volleyball Championships.
Spectacular regattas and summer events such as Kiel Week or Travemünde Week make the Baltic coast a paradise for all yachtsmen and sailors. The estuary is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. The colourful activities on the water can be observed in total comfort from on land. What’s more, the sailing events around the yacht harbour invite you to spend relaxing summer days on the coast with a load of extra fun and entertainment.
In Holstein Switzerland
The small natural paradise of Holstein Switzerland, located in the hinterland rather than directly on the sea, is the largest nature park in Schleswig-Holstein. The undulating landscape, which is best explored by shank’s mare or on a bike ride, extends between Plön, Eutin and Bad Malente. Around the 200 small and large bodies of water, you will see magnificent castles, stately homes and pretty villages with thatched cottages, mills and churches.
Insider tip, even amongst those exploring by water
The region between the rose town of Eutin and the Immenhof film setting of Bad Malente, between the ducal town of Plön and the cobblers’ town of Preetz, is considered an insider tip, even amongst those exploring by water. For the glistening blue Schwentine, once coined ‘holy river’ by the Slavs, snakes right through the middle of it. Here you dive right into nature and can observe kingfishers and white-tailed eagles under the thick canopy of old deciduous leaves. After pausing for a swim at one of the picturesque lakes you can often find fresh, home-made cakes and fine gateaux on offer at one of the charming farmyard cafes.
