A cyclist’s paradise surrounded by Schleswig-Holstein’s most beautiful river landscape
The 240-km-long eider-treene-sorge cycle path* takes a round route through the largest lowland area in Schleswig-Holstein. The landscape of this region is marked by rivers, plains, forests, moors and canals. The route winds between the towns of Husum, Heide, Schleswig and Rendsburg, through unspoiled nature, along riverbanks which offer an ideal habitat for rare plant and animal species.
Time seems to stand still in the little villages with their timbered houses with thatched roofs. Here, in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein, you will find a tranquil place to relax and experience a fascinating natural backdrop from your bicycle.
Route and sights of interest
The tour begins in Friedrichstadt and takes you through Süderstapel, Schwabstedt, Hollingstedt, Bergenhusen, Börm/Alt Bennebek, Föhrden/Hohn, Lexfähre, Tellingstedt, Schalkholz, Hennstedt and Lunden. From here it takes you back to the starting point. Connecting routes and ‘town links’ to Husum, Schleswig, Rendsburg and Heide allow you to make minor detours to the towns and into the surrounding area. On summer weekends in Bargen and Hohn you can cross the Eider on a traditional small ferry for foot passengers and bicycles.
Small towns – original lifestyle
You’ll be amazed at the many sights to see in the idyllic towns and historic villages. Discover old farmhouses, wild moorlands and rare animals and try some home-made Tilsiter cheese.
Wander through the narrow alleys in Friedrichstadt. The many bridges, canals and stepped gable houses will remind you of the Netherlands. Alternatively, you can visit the schoolhouse museum in Hollingstedt. It has authentic collections of canes, benches, blackboards and inkwells from the period around 1900.
Wild times
The stork village of Bergenhusen, with 14 pairs of brooding storks, has the greatest stork population density in north-west Germany. And not without reason, as these endangered birds can still find plenty of food here. In May, at the end of the brooding season, stork lovers can follow the action live on the screen in the NABU Institute as the nestlings hatch and grow.
You're bound to have a wild time at the Schalkholz falconry centre too. Here, birds of prey such as falcons, owls and eagles are trained to hunt using traditional methods. Visitors can marvel at their abilities.
If you want to learn more about the river landscape of Eider-Treene-Sorge, make sure you stop at the Lunden ‘NaTourCentrum’, where a multimedia exhibition gives you insights into the history of the earth. A visit to the Nature and Environment Centre in Hohn is recommended for families. Here, in the open-air otter enclosure, you can observe the cute animals being fed each day (at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.).
Getting there and back
There are rail connections to the towns of Husum, Heide, Schleswig, Rendsburg, Lunden and Friedrichstadt. The trains go every hour and you can bring your bike on board.
Terrain and difficulty of the route
Terrain:
The eider-treene-sorge cycle path* follows well-developed farmers’ roads, minor roads and cycle paths away from the road traffic.
Relief:
The route is mostly flat in the lowland areas, as well as in the North Frisian marsh and the Dithmarsch marsh in the west. The place to expect hills is the Geestland in the eastern part of the route.
Signage:
The cycle path is fully signed.
Information boards:
Numerous information boards along the side of the route offer facts about the region, its river landscape and its flora and fauna.
Difficulty level:
The route is easy to ride and is quite suitable for beginners and families with children as well as long-distance riders.
Places to stop or stay the night
Along the eider-treene-sorge cycle path* there are cosy restaurants and romantic farmhouse cafes where tired riders can refuel for their onward journey.
Those doing a round trip have a wide range of accommodation options. You are free to choose between private rooms and hotels, campsites, youth hostels and holiday apartments. Or perhaps you would prefer the ‘holiday farm’ or an overnight stay in the hay hostel?
Bicycle hire and repair service
Some of the places to rent bikes or have them repaired are in the villages of Friedrichstadt, Schwabstedt, Norderstapel, Süderstapel, Bargen, Hennstedt, Tellingstedt and Bergenhusen, and the towns of Husum, Schleswig, Rendsburg and Heide.
