Dithmarschen: Green and surrounded by water
Sand moulds left behind by budding castle builders in the summer are washed away by the North Sea in the first autumn storms, down to the beaches of Dithmarschen to the south. This broad, green holiday paradise is completely surrounded by water – the North Sea to the west, the Eider to the North, the Kiel Canal to the East, the mouth of the Elbe to the south – and there are many holiday adventures for young and old in the middle.
Little explorers can look abandoned seal pups in their beady eyes at the seal station in Friedrichskoog, and for older connoisseurs there are crabs fresh from the cutter ships in the North Sea resorts of Büsum and Freidrichskoog.
It is impossible to think of the North Sea without these colourful and curvaceous fishing boats – and once a year they make a grand appearance when they compete for victory in the Friedrichskoog Cutter Regatta. Visitors can even be on board to experience the spectacle first hand.
