Central Holstein
The geographical centre of Schleswig-Holstein is situated in the small town of Nortorf. The region around Aukrug, Nortorf, Bordesholm, Molfsee and Hohenweststedt is framed by the Aukrug and Westensee natural parks. Off the beaten track, between enchanted lakes, rolling hills, fields and forests, there are unique nature adventures in store in the characteristic hedgerow landscape. Hedgerows, or ‘Knicks’, is the name for the wall-like tree and shrub hedges which mark the landscape of Schleswig-Holstein.
In the Arche Warder, Europe’s largest zoo for rare and threatened farm animals, visitors can get to know such unfamiliar quadrupeds as the Juan-Fernandez Goat, the Poitou Donkey or a German Peking Duck. A close and personal insight into the cultural history and folklore of the region is on offer at the Molfsee Open-Air Museum, the largest outdoor museum in northern Germany, with many historic buildings, farm courtyards and mills along with the corresponding work tools.
