Castles, parks and gardens
Great choice: from baroque finery to fairs and markets
The north has castles, too! The most significant building is the former castle residence of Gottorf in Schleswig. This typical Renaissance estate now houses the state museums. The archaeological treasures of Schleswig-Holstein are on show, along with art and cultural history from the Late Middle Ages through to modernity. The main attraction is the restored baroque garden with the fascinating Gottorf Globe.
Right in the north, east of Flensburg, is the grand moated castle of Glücksburg. This is one of the most significant residences in northern Europe, an attraction furnished to the highest standards of luxury.
Great residences
The monumental Schloss Eutin also has a great history as a residence. The wonderfully restored chambers and magnificent furnishings are open to visitors, and can also be experienced when exhibitions and concerts are held.
In the summer months, the popular Eutin Opera Festival is held on the open-air stage in the extensive castle grounds.
Also worth seeing are Schloss Ahrensburg, Schloss Reinbek and the only castle on the west coast, Schloss Husum with its crocus park which blooms in the spring.
Fairs and markets
Angeln, Ostholstein and the Duchy of Lauenburg district have an abundance of country estates. Many of these host fairs and markets all year round (Altenhof, Basthorst, Sierhagen, Stockseehof, Wotersen amongst others).
Many hold series of concerts (such as Emkendorf, Hasselburg, Husum and Salzau). Others are attractive destinations for excursions, thanks to their parks and gardens (such as Damp, Ludwigsburg, Plön and Weissenhaus). Some also have rooms for holiday guests.
